Architecture

UFS School of Architecture

The subject Design forms the backbone of any course in architecture.

The design programme of the University of the Free State (UFS) School of Architecture is founded on "the making of meaningful place" - a universal theme that has been propagated by Christiaan Norberg-Schulz since the 1980's in Genius Loci: Towards a Phenomenology of Architecture and The Concept of Dwelling.

The multi-dimensional character of architecture is thus explored in view of the human ecological landscape, and bears effect on the interrelationship between man - both as individual and social being - the environment - both natural and man-made - culture - local as well as

universal - and time - historical and contemporary.

Throughout the course certain design constants are also identified that are tested on grounds of different environmental, socio-economic and methodological variables, in order to demonstrate the application of the universal principles of design.
