When disaster strikes, all living creatures naturally react with fight-or-flight. But what if you’re not strong enough, or have nowhere to run? It is then when suffering sets in. Hunger, death, degradation, loss, damage, destruction, distraught. Since 2001, we had the vision to reduce disaster risk – because we can!
At the University of the Free State (UFS) Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (DiMTEC), we strive towards informing the public about disaster risk reduction through education. Our Master’s, post graduate degrees in disaster management, short courses and research are of the highest quality. The recent addition of a PhD ensures that research towards making a difference continue in various fields.
DiMTEC’s first course was approved and registered by the South African Qualifications Authority in 2001, after which we joined the Department of Agricultural Economics with the vision of becoming an independent centre, that came about in 2005.
We have close ties with several United Nations institutions such as UNU-EHS, UNU-FLORES, UNOOSA, UNSPIDER, UNEASCO, UNEP, UNCCD, UNISDR and UNDP. Furthermore, we have good working relationships with NGO’s such as CARE International, OXFAM, ADRA and other. Universities we collaborate with include:
- National University of science and Technology, Zimbabwe
- Kenyatta University, Kenya
- University of Cape Town
- Freie University of Berlin
- Technical University Dresden, Germany
- University of Bonn, Germany
- Public University of Hungary
- Novi Sad University, Serbia
- University Babes Bolyai, Romania

DiMTEC is proud to be in the foreground of disaster management training in Africa. If you want to make a difference – become a “DiMTECtor”!
